Welcome to the
School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS)
at Stony Brook University!

Many exciting opportunities are available to students at SoMAS. The Center's faculty encompass a broad range of expertise and cutting-edge programs, involving independent and interdisciplinary research. These programs take many of our students across the world to remote and wonderful areas, as well as to the beautiful and diverse waterways of the New York region.
As part of our academic curriculum, SoMAS students engage in field and lab-work with the belief that such hands-on experience is critical to career development and professional success.
Students also learn the quantitative and analytical skills to be competitive in today's job market. At present, careers in the marine, atmospheric, and environmental sciences are prospering under global interests for a cleaner, safer, and more productive world. Most graduates of SoMAS embark on rewarding careers in government, industry, academia, and consulting. With nearly 300 graduate and undergraduate students, SoMAS is a thriving place. We encourage you to explore our website to learn more about research, facilities, Stony Brook University, and the Long Island region.
