The New York Marine Sciences Consortium is an association of colleges, universities, and degree-granting institutions with expertise and interest in marine and/or coastal science. NYMSC is the voice of New York State’s marine science academic community and strives to influence public policy, communicate science, and increase funding for the marine sciences within New York.
Marine science has always been a highly interdisciplinary field that defies institutional boundaries. It has a rich tradition of team-based research and education where scientists from many backgrounds join forces to tackle important environmental problems that span the world’s oceans, or develop and deliver an interdisciplinary curriculum. NYMSC is a platform to facilitate even greater collaboration and advocacy.

FY13 NSF, NOAA & NASA Appropriations Marks
This week the House and Senate unveiled their FY13 Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations Bills. Both bills give NSF a decent funding increase, albeit below the President’s request. The difference in the bills involves a Senate proposal to move the NOAA satellites to NASA. The Senate is assuming this shift will save $117 million and that they use those funds to plus-up a variety of science and education programs. The details of the House bill are not yet available, but the cut in NOAA operations funding and their pledge to fully fund satellite requests means that many ocean, coastal, science and education programs will likely be targeted for cuts. NYMSC provides recommendations to NYS and the Governor concerning hydraulic fracturing for recovery of natural gas
