The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University invites applications for the Instructional Support Associate to work in the Lab of Dr. Joe Warren.

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in fisheries science, oceanography, marine science, or related field (e.g. natural, physical, or computer sciences). Experience with the collection of fisheries data.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in fisheries science, oceanography, marine science, or a related field. Analysis (identification and enumeration) of zooplankton and nekton net samples. Collection and analysis of active acoustic fishery echosounder datasets. At-sea experience in conducting CTD casts, net tows, and fish trawls. Data management experience. Scientific data analysis experience.

Brief Description of Duties:

The SoMAS Instructional Support Associate position provides data collection support for the offshore monitoring surveys and research cruises in the New York Bight.

The selected candidate will have strong communication skills. They will need to have experience collecting data in varying weather conditions while out at at sea (small boat experience is sufficient).

  • Conducting sampling during research cruises, including pre- and post-cruise preparation.
  • Collect and process active acoustic fishery echosounder survey data. Post-processing scientific echosounder data.
  • Enumeration and identification of net tow samples from the NY Bight.
  • Assist with database management.
  • Assist with writing reports and data summaries.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:

This is a full time appointment. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of FLSA.
